Boat Ramp Advisory

Boat Ramp Update From CVRD

December 1, 2025
CVRD staff continue to work with the project engineer and construction crews to complete the new Shingle Spit Boat Launch. On December 4 and 5, crews will be on-site to complete the remaining work when the tides are low. At that point, the ramp will be in suitable condition for community members to retrieve their boats on Sunday, December 7 (as there is work being completed at Tribune Bay Campground on December 6 so the boat ramp will not be accessible).
Should community members need to retrieve their boats prior to December 7, they can use the Bill Mee Boat Ramp on Denman Island and the CVRD will reimburse them for their costs.
Staff have heard concerns from the community about the design of the new boat launch, specifically the abutment ramp which makes it difficult for trailers to back in from the south side. As a result, the project engineer and staff will be meeting with community members to discuss the best path forward in making sure boat launch access is as functional as possible. The date for the community meeting has yet to be determined, but the plan is to have it around mid-December. More updates will be coming (including the proposed community meeting) next week.
Thank you for your continued patience!

About the Committee

The Boat Ramp Committee formed in September 2016 to advise the Comox Valley Regional District on the maintenance and upgrades to Hornby’s only public access boat ramp located beside the ferry landing at Shingle Spit The Comox Valley Regional District (CVRD) currently has a license of occupation for the Crown Land where the boat ramp is located and had an engineering assessment done on it several years ago which recommended complete replacement. The Boat Ramp Committee has raised over $10,000 as matching funds for grant applications.

After many years significant progress has been made on the project to replace the boat ramp at Shingle Spit with a new state of the art, safe and more functional boat ramp. Progress has been made possible in large part due to the involvement of Regional Director Daniel Arbour to secure substantial funding to make the project a reality. In May 2024 a community meeting was held at the Shingle Spit boat ramp attended by 20 or so folks to respond to preliminary designs and a presentation by Cascara consulting engineers.

CVRD Parks Technician Daniel May has directed this project over the past several years which has also involved the inputs and approvals of relevant senior government agencies and First Nations. The CVRD plans to distribute tender packages for the project in early 2025 in hopes that construction can begin early this summer when tides are favourable and impacts to marine life will be minimized.

As the project proceeds the Boat Ramp Advisory committee will likely be involved with future operational issues such as parking and launch management as well as possible fee structures to help offset operational costs.
